Episode 30 – Rubato – Help or Hinder?

We are discussing the use of tempo rubato, and whether there is a need for it, and if so, when and where in ballet class.

The literal meaning of tempo rubato is ‘robbed time’, and refers to expressive and rhythmic freedom, by slightly slowing down and speeding up at the discretion of the musician as they play.

We talk about where rubato can be useful and how it can help dancers in their technique and artistry, but as David will state very clearly, it can also hinder greatly in dancers that are not advanced and don’t have that understanding of their technique and musicality.
